Dr. Stuart Silverman, the Center’s founder and Medical
Director, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Rheumatology
at UCLA and a member of the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF)
Scientific Advisory Board and Education Committee. He is board
certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology
and the co-joint Boards of Allergy and Immunology. He is internationally
recognized in the fields of osteoporosis and fibromyalgia, and
is a member of the National Advisory Boards of Amgen, Aventis,
Eli Lilly & Company, Merck, Novartis, and Roche Laboratories.
Dr. Silverman has published over 40 peer review and scientific
articles on rheumatology and osteoporosis as well as numerous
abstracts and chapters. He is the developer of the Osteoporosis
Assessment Questionnaire or OPAQ, an internationally used osteoporosis-targeted
quality of life self-assessment instrument. His research interests
in osteoporosis include quality of life measurement, prevention
and treatment of postmenopausal and glucocorticoid osteoporosis,
male osteoporosis, patient decision making, and development of
patient education and self-management programs.
Dr. Silverman is a member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation’s
committee of scientific advisors and a consultant to the NIH Osteoporosis
and Related Bone Diseases-National Resource Center. He is also
the Medical Director of the Fibromyalgia Rehabilitation Program
of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as well as a member of the
Advisory Board of the National Fibromyalgia Association. He maintains
an active private practice and is the Principal Investigator for
a number of multi-center research grants.
